What a Personal Agent Actually Is

A chat assistant waits for you to open a tab, answers, and mostly forgets you when you leave. A personal agent is built the other way around. It runs continuously on a computer or server that you control, it keeps its own memory of who you are and what you are working on, and it can be reached from the messaging apps you already use.

It also acts. Because it runs on your own machine or server, it can be given access to files, tools and routines, and can work on a task while you are away from the screen. Think of it less like a search box and more like a very literal assistant you have to set up and supervise.

This is different from the terminal agents in the earlier course. A terminal agent is started when you need it and stops when you close it. A personal agent is meant to stay on.

That difference is the appeal, and also the catch. Something that stays on, remembers, and can act is more useful than a chatbot, and it is also something you are now responsible for running and securing.

Takeaway: a personal agent stays on, remembers you, and can act on your behalf. That is more useful than a chatbot and more work to run safely.
