What Running AI Locally Means

When you use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, your words travel to a company’s computers, get processed there, and the answer comes back. Running AI locally means the model sits on your own computer and does the work there. Nothing leaves your machine.

People come back to local AI for three reasons: privacy, cost and control. Your data stays with you. There is no per-message bill, and the main ongoing expense is electricity. And you decide which model to run and how, without a company changing terms or pricing under you.

The trade is quality and speed. The most capable models are far too large for a home computer, so local models are generally less capable than the best cloud ones, though the gap keeps narrowing. Speed depends on your hardware.

That trade is fine for many jobs and wrong for others. The rest of the course is about telling which is which.

Takeaway: local AI trades some capability for privacy, control and no per-use cost. It is a good tool for certain jobs, not a replacement for everything.
