Pricing Traps: Subscriptions, Credits, and Lifetime Deals
AI tools are priced in three main shapes, and each has a trap built in. Subscriptions are the honest default, but they add up quietly — four “cheap” tools at $20 a month is nearly a thousand dollars a year, and the cost hides because no single charge feels big.
Credit systems are the murkiest. You buy credits, actions cost credits, and the exchange rate between credits and actual finished output is often impossible to calculate before you're inside. If you can't figure out what one finished piece of work costs in real dollars, assume it's more than you think — vagueness in pricing always favors the seller.
Lifetime deals sound like the smart buyer's move, and occasionally they are. But “lifetime” means the lifetime of the product, and products sold mainly through deep-discount lifetime deals are often funding a sprint, not a marathon. If the tool folds in a year, your lifetime deal lived exactly that long.
Takeaway: total your subscriptions yearly, not monthly; translate credits into cost-per-finished-thing before buying; and treat lifetime deals as a bet on the company, not a discount.
