How AI Actually Works
Part 1: Accounts & Costs

No jargon, no assumptions. What's actually happening when you type into a chat box, which accounts are worth having, and why the free versions feel so limited.

Part 1 of 4 10-Minute Read Zero Jargon

What's actually happening when you use AI

Strip away the buzzwords and it's simple: you're typing into a website that's connected to a very large prediction machine sitting in a data center somewhere. That's it. No robot, no consciousness, no magic — just an extremely well-trained system that's really good at guessing the next word.

⌨️

You type a message

A question, a request, a task — plain English, no special commands needed.

🧠

It gets sent to the model

A massive pattern-matching system reads your message and predicts the best possible reply, one piece at a time.

💬

The answer streams back

What looks like "typing" on screen is really the model building its answer piece by piece, live.

Every single AI chat tool — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and the hundreds of smaller apps built on top of them — is a version of this same loop. Once that clicks, none of it feels mysterious anymore.

The accounts actually worth having

Here's a shortcut that saves a lot of confusion: most of the AI tools and apps you'll come across are built on top of just three underlying companies. Get accounts with these three first — everything else is optional.

All three are genuinely free to sign up for — no credit card required just to create an account and start chatting.

Free vs. paid, explained honestly

Every major AI tool runs on the same basic model: a real, usable free version, and a paid version (usually around $20/month) that removes the ceiling. Here's what that actually buys you — as of mid-2026. These numbers move around constantly, so treat them as "roughly this," not gospel, and always check the tool's own pricing page before you commit.

ChatGPT

Free · Plus ~$20/mo
Free
Plus

Free gives you a real daily allowance of messages on a lighter model, then drops you to an even lighter one once you hit the cap. Plus roughly doubles your usage room, unlocks the stronger reasoning model, and adds faster image and video generation.

Claude

Free · Pro ~$20/mo
Free
Pro

Free is genuinely capable — memory, web search, and file uploads are all included — but usage refills on a rolling window and resets faster than you'd like on a busy day. Pro gives roughly five times the usage room, unlocks the more powerful model, and adds project folders.

Gemini

Free · AI Pro ~$20/mo
Free
AI Pro

Free covers everyday chat, image generation, and a taste of Google's research tools, but caps out fast on the more powerful model and the amount of text it can "remember" in one conversation. Paid tiers raise every one of those ceilings.

💡

The honest takeaway: the free version of any of these three is enough to learn on. You don't need to pay for anything on day one — upgrade only once you're actually hitting the wall, not before.

Why "free" AI tools feel so limited

This is the part almost nobody explains plainly, and it's the honest reason every free tier has a ceiling: every single response — even a short one — costs the company real computing power to generate. There's no way around that cost. A free account is the company giving you a taste of that power at their expense; a paid account is you buying more of it directly.

That's true whether you're using ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any of the smaller free-to-use AI tools out there — none of them are "fully unlocked" for free, because the computing power behind every answer genuinely costs money to run. It's not a trick or a bait-and-switch. It's the same reason a free trial at the gym doesn't include a personal trainer for life.

The words on every pricing page — decoded

These four words show up on every AI pricing page, and nobody stops to explain them. Here they are in plain English.

Tokens
The chunks a model breaks text into to read and write it — roughly ¾ of a word each. You'll rarely deal with these directly, but every limit is measured in them behind the scenes.
Context Window
How much text the model can "hold in mind" at once — your whole conversation plus any files you've uploaded. Run past it, and it starts forgetting the earliest parts.
Messages / Credits
Your usage allowance — think of it like minutes on an old phone plan. Free plans get a small allowance that refills on a timer; paid plans get a much bigger one.
Rate Limit
The point where you've used up your allowance and have to wait for it to refill — usually a few hours — before you can send more messages.

Start here — in this order

1
Create a free ChatGPT account

chatgpt.com — sign up with an email or Google account, no card needed.

2
Create a free Claude account

claude.ai — same deal, free tier included by default.

3
Create a free Gemini account

gemini.google.com — instant if you already have a Google account.

4
Use all three free for two weeks before paying for anything

See which one actually fits how you work. Then upgrade the one you use most — not all three.
